Chapter 15

I was still shaken over the Jimmy Earl situation when Uncle Myron came to get me to take me to Miss Lovenia’s house. I felt like a fallen angel . . . like I had committed a horrible sin against God, myself, the family, and Cedric. Every time I went past a mirror, I looked the other way because I couldn’t bear to look at myself. I didn’t want to see my eyes looking back at me knowing I had almost kissed Jimmy Earl . . . that I wanted him to kiss me and, had Mr. Tote not walked up on us, there was no telling what might have happened.

When Jimmy Earl came back to the house after he and Tote buried the mule, he went upstairs, got dressed, and left with barely a word to anyone. I had no words for him and, thankfully, he had no words for me. He did look at me long and hard before walking out, but I hurried away when the stare became too much.

“What’s wrong with that boy?” I heard Miss Peggy ask Granny as I headed back to the kitchen. I didn’t wait to hear what Granny said. By the time I came back out, Miss Peggy had moved on to talking to Granny about other things. For the rest of my time at Miss Peggy’s that day, I stayed focused on my chores, not saying much to either Miss Peggy or Granny, and they didn’t seem to pay me too much mind either.

When Uncle Myron pulled up, I kissed Granny and rushed out to the car and hopped in, barely getting out more than a “hello.” I couldn’t get out of my own mind. Uncle Myron must have figured out I wasn’t up for talking, so he turned the radio on to WSB, where the Carter Family was singing “Keep on the Sunny Side.” We rode in silence until we got to Miss Lovenia’s house.

“Thank you, Uncle Myron,” I said as I gathered my things, ready to jump out of his car just like I had jumped into it. But he reached over and grabbed my hand.

“This has been a difficult week for you. For all of us. Let me say a quick prayer,” he said. I nodded and bowed my head. “Lord, take care of my niece as she undertakes this new job. Surround her with ten thousand angels of protection, and keep her sound in mind and body until I can come back for her. In your Son’s name we pray. Amen.”

“Amen,” I whispered, trying to hold back my tears.

Uncle Myron continued to hold my hand. “Even though I fuss at you and push you to be all that I know you can be, you know I love you, baby girl, don’t you?”

I nodded, a single tear sliding down my face. “I know, Uncle Myron. I love you too.”

Uncle Myron pulled me close, and I laid my head on his shoulder. “You are a wonderful young woman, Opal Pruitt.
